This Thanksgiving, There’s Room for You, Too

This Thanksgiving, There’s Room for You, Too

By Charlotte Ferguson

Happy Thanksgiving, Waterloo Region.

For some of us, today means a full table, familiar faces, and someone insisting we have room for one more helping.

For others, it’s a quiet apartment. An empty chair. A family gathering that feels complicated rather than comforting. Or the worry of trying to buy groceries when there’s already more month than money.

I want to make room for all of those experiences today.

If Thanksgiving doesn’t feel especially happy this year, I see you. You don’t have to pretend otherwise.

You can be grateful for parts of your life and still feel lonely, disappointed, overwhelmed, or sad. Both can be true. Gratitude doesn’t cancel out grief, and a holiday doesn’t magically make a difficult relationship easier.

Maybe you’re missing someone. Maybe you’re far from home. Maybe you’ve chosen some distance from family because you need peace. Maybe you’re surrounded by people and still feel alone.

Whatever your circumstances, you deserve kindness, a good meal, and a place where you feel welcome.

If groceries are a stretch right now

Please use the food resources in our community if you need them. You don’t need to wait until every cupboard is empty to ask where help is available.

The Food Bank of Waterloo Region has a Find Food page to help you locate food hampers, community meals, and other food assistance. If you’re unsure where to start, call 519-743-5576, extension 340, or email needfood@thefoodbank.ca.

There are also 519 Community Collective Little Free Pantries at these locations:

These pantries are listed as available 24 hours a day, with no application, documents, or payment required. They rely on donations, so what’s available will vary.

Community Fridge KW is outside the Kitchener Market at 300 King Street East, Kitchener. The 519 Nourish Community Fridge is at 150 Roger Street, Waterloo. Both are listed by the City of Kitchener as accessible 24/7. You can find information about the community fridges here. Food availability depends on donations.

If you need a meal

Tiny Home Takeout offers homemade meals on a pay-what-you-can basis, welcoming everyone.

Its posted regular hours are:

  • 56 Duke Street West, Kitchener: Tuesday–Saturday, 5–6:30 p.m.

  • 505 Franklin Street North, Kitchener: Wednesday and Friday, 6:30–7:30 p.m.

St. John’s Kitchen at 97 Victoria Street North, Kitchener, provides a free weekday meal and a gathering place for people experiencing homelessness or living in vulnerable circumstances. Call 519-745-8928 to confirm meal times and holiday service.

These are ongoing resources, not confirmed Thanksgiving Day meal events. Tiny Home Takeout’s regular schedule does not include Mondays. Please check with providers before travelling, especially over the holiday.

If you need help finding food today, call 211 Ontario. Its telephone service is available 24/7 and can help you identify local services and check where to turn.

If you just need a little normal

Sometimes you don’t need a big celebration or a deep conversation. You just need to get out of the house, see a few faces, and spend time somewhere that doesn’t ask much of you.

A library visit can be a gentle place to start when branches reopen. You can browse, read, or simply spend a little time around other people without having to buy anything.

Explore the Kitchener Public Library programs and events and Waterloo Public Library adult programs. Look for free activities that suit you, whether that’s a creative group, a book discussion, or a social gathering. Check each listing for registration, age requirements, and availability.

Waterloo Public Library also lists older-adult programs, including Seniors Social Clubs.

If you’re unsure what’s nearby, ask 211 about free or low-cost social programs and community spaces in your neighbourhood.

You don’t have to arrive cheerful. You don’t have to tell anyone your whole story. A small, ordinary outing is allowed to be enough.

If you’re feeling more blue than usual

If the sadness feels heavier than usual, or you’re finding it difficult to cope, you deserve support now.

Here 24/7 connects people across Waterloo Wellington with mental health, addictions, and crisis services. Call 1-844-437-3247, any time, day or night. You don’t have to know which service you need before you reach out.

If you’re thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8 for support, available 24/7.

And if you’d like to reach out to me, please do. You can send me a private message at @findinghomewithCharlotte. You don’t need a real estate question or a polished explanation. “I’m having a hard day” is enough. I’m here to listen and help you find a next step.

A little kindness goes a long way

If you have some room to give this week, consider adding a few items to a little pantry, supporting The Food Bank, or checking in on someone whose holiday might be quieter than yours.

A specific invitation can make it easier to say yes: “Would you like to take a walk?” “Can I bring you a plate?” “Want some company?”

Leave room for a no, too. Care can be offered without pressure.

However today looks for you, I hope there’s a moment of comfort in it. Something warm to eat. A kind voice. A little breathing room.

Happy Thanksgiving. And if “happy” feels like too much today, I’m simply wishing you a gentler day.

You matter here.
