How to Host a Garage Sale That Actually Makes You Money

Whether you're clearing out years of accumulated treasures, downsizing, or getting your home ready for sale, a garage sale can be one of the easiest ways to simplify your space while putting a little extra cash in your pocket.

The difference between a garage sale that earns $50 and one that earns $500 often comes down to preparation.

Here are my favourite tips for making your next garage sale a success.

Start Earlier Than You Think

Don't wait until the night before.

Begin sorting through your home two to four weeks in advance. Work room by room and create four piles:

  • Keep

  • Sell

  • Donate

  • Recycle or Dispose

If you haven't used something in years, chances are someone else will be thrilled to give it a new home.

Clean Everything

People are much more likely to buy something that's clean.

Take a few minutes to:

  • Wipe down furniture

  • Wash children's toys

  • Fold clothing neatly

  • Test electronics

  • Replace batteries if needed

Presentation matters.

Price to Sell

Remember why you're having a garage sale.

Most shoppers are looking for bargains.

General pricing guidelines:

  • Books: $1–3

  • Adult clothing: $2–10

  • Children's clothing: $1–5

  • Kitchen items: $1–10

  • Small appliances: $10–30

  • Furniture: 20–30% of retail value

If you're unsure, price slightly higher than your minimum and be prepared to negotiate.

Display Like a Store

Nobody wants to dig through boxes.

Instead:

  • Hang clothing whenever possible.

  • Use tables to keep items off the ground.

  • Group similar items together.

  • Label sections clearly.

  • Leave plenty of walking space.

The easier it is to browse, the more people tend to buy.

Advertise Everywhere

The best garage sales are the ones people know about.

Post your sale:

  • Facebook Marketplace

  • Local community Facebook groups

  • Kijiji

  • Nextdoor

  • Garage sale websites

  • Neighbourhood signs (where permitted)

Include:

  • Date

  • Start and end times

  • Address

  • Major items available

  • Photos of your best pieces

Good photos can double your traffic.

Start Early

Many experienced garage sale shoppers are out before 8:00 a.m.

If you're planning to open at 9:00, expect people arriving by 8:30.

Having everything ready before opening makes for a much smoother day.

Have Change Ready

You'll want:

  • Plenty of $5 bills

  • $10 bills

  • Coins

  • A secure cash box

Many shoppers also appreciate being able to pay by e-transfer, so having that option available can help you make additional sales.

Bundle Items

People love a deal.

Try offers like:

  • 5 books for $10

  • Fill a grocery bag for $20

  • Buy two, get one free

Bundles help move inventory quickly.

Think Safety

If possible:

  • Have another adult with you.

  • Keep your home locked.

  • Limit access inside your house.

  • Keep valuables out of sight.

  • Stay aware of your cash box.

A little preparation goes a long way.

What Doesn't Sell?

Don't bring it back inside.

Arrange donation pickup or drop it off at a local charity while you're already in decluttering mode.

You'll enjoy the clean space far more than another year of storing those items.

Thinking About Selling Your Home?

One of the biggest hurdles homeowners face before listing is simply having too much stuff.

A garage sale is one of the easiest ways to make your home feel larger, brighter, and more inviting before professional photos or showings begin.

If you're wondering what should stay, what should go, or how to prepare your home for the market, I'd be happy to help. Sometimes an hour of planning can make a significant difference in both buyer appeal and your final sale price.

Decluttering doesn't just create space—it creates opportunity.

Your Home Is More Than a Place to Live—It's One of Your Biggest Financial Assets

For many Canadians, their home is their single largest investment. Yet after moving in, it's easy to put it on autopilot. Life gets busy, mortgage payments become routine, and years can pass before you stop to ask one simple question:

"Is my home still working for me?"

Whether you've owned your home for three years or thirty, taking time to review your home's value, your mortgage, and your future plans can put you in a much stronger financial position.

Your Home Has Been Working Behind the Scenes

Over time, your home may have built significant equity through mortgage payments, appreciation, and improvements you've made along the way.

That equity isn't just a number on paper. It can become a tool to help you:

  • Renovate your home.

  • Consolidate higher-interest debt.

  • Help children with a down payment.

  • Purchase a cottage or investment property.

  • Downsize and free up cash for retirement.

  • Move into a home that better fits your lifestyle.

The first step is simply understanding what your options are.

Markets Change—So Should Your Strategy

Real estate markets evolve. Interest rates rise and fall. Lending guidelines change. Your family's needs certainly don't stay the same.

A mortgage or real estate strategy that made perfect sense five years ago may no longer be the best fit today.

That's why reviewing your situation every couple of years is one of the smartest financial habits homeowners can develop.

You Don't Have to Be Moving Tomorrow

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you only need a REALTOR® or Mortgage Agent when you're buying or selling.

In reality, many of the best financial decisions happen long before there's a moving truck in the driveway.

Sometimes the best outcome is discovering that staying exactly where you are is the right decision.

Other times, you'll uncover opportunities you didn't know existed.

Knowledge Creates Options

Understanding your home's current value, your available equity, and your mortgage options gives you choices.

And having choices gives you confidence.

Whether your next move is months away or years down the road, creating a plan today makes tomorrow's decisions much easier.

Curious About Your Home's Position Today?

I'd be happy to help you review:

  • Your home's current market value.

  • Your available equity.

  • Your mortgage options.

  • Whether staying, renovating, refinancing, or moving makes the most financial sense.

There is absolutely no pressure—just honest advice to help you make informed decisions.

🍦 The Ultimate Ice Cream Trail of Waterloo Region

One summer. One mission. Countless scoops.

There's something nostalgic about chasing ice cream on a warm summer evening.

Maybe it's the excitement of deciding between a waffle cone and a cup. Maybe it's the tradition of stopping after a baseball game, a hike, or a trip to the farmers' market. Or maybe it's simply that ice cream tastes better when it's shared with family and friends.

Whatever your reason, Waterloo Region has no shortage of incredible places to satisfy your sweet tooth.

So, welcome to the Magnolia Living Ice Cream Trail—a self-guided adventure celebrating some of our favourite local spots. Whether you're a lifelong resident or new to the area, this guide is your invitation to explore one delicious stop at a time.

How the Ice Cream Trail Works

There's no right way to complete the trail.

Visit one shop a week, spend an afternoon exploring several communities, or make it your family's summer tradition.

Along the way you'll discover:

  • Independent ice cream shops

  • Small-town favourites

  • Handmade treats

  • Frozen yogurt

  • Gelato

  • Soft serve

  • Hidden gems worth the drive

Remember—it's not a race. It's an excuse to enjoy summer.

.Make It an Adventure

Instead of simply grabbing dessert after dinner, turn each visit into a mini day trip.

Pair your ice cream stop with:

  • A walk through a local park

  • A scenic trail

  • Shopping at local boutiques

  • A farmers' market

  • Live music

  • A picnic

  • A visit to a local museum

  • Exploring a neighbourhood you've never visited before

Some of the best summer memories begin with simply deciding to try somewhere new.

Magnolia Living's Ice Cream Challenge

Can you visit every community on this list before Labour Day?

Create your own challenge:

🍦 Try one new flavour every visit.

🍦 Visit at least one shop you've never been to before.

🍦 Take a photo at each stop.

🍦 Support local whenever you can.

🍦 Bring a friend—or your dog if the shop has a pet-friendly outdoor area.

By the end of summer, you'll have explored more of Waterloo Region than you ever expected.

🍦 The Ultimate Ice Cream Trail of Waterloo Region

One summer. One region. So many scoops.

There is something wonderfully nostalgic about an ice cream run. It might be after a soccer game, a trip to the farmers’ market, a walk with the dog, or just one of those warm summer evenings where dinner can absolutely be followed by a cone.

Welcome to the Magnolia Living Ice Cream Trail: a sweet little summer adventure through Waterloo Region and nearby favourites.

Waterloo

Start in Waterloo with a classic Uptown stroll and a cone in hand.

Scoop Du Jour
A beloved Uptown Waterloo stop for classic scoops and easy summer wandering.

Four All Ice Cream
Known for locally made flavours, creative combinations, and inclusive options, Four All has scoop shops in Waterloo and Downtown Kitchener.

Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt
Perfect for the “I want 14 toppings and no judgment” crowd.

Baskin-Robbins
Reliable, nostalgic, and always a solid choice for cones, sundaes, and ice cream cakes.

Dairy Queen
Because sometimes the answer is simply: Blizzard.

Kitchener

Kitchener has some seriously fun dessert stops.

Ice Cream 2
A local favourite often mentioned when people ask where to go for ice cream in Kitchener.

Sweet Caroline’s Ice Cream & Café
Part café, part bakery, part ice cream stop. Great when everyone in the group wants something different.

Rollz Ice Cream & Desserts
Rolled ice cream is half dessert, half entertainment.

Ice Flame
Creative desserts, rolled ice cream, waffles, shakes, and plenty of options for anyone with a serious sweet tooth.

Marble Slab Creamery
Custom mix-ins, big choices, and very dangerous decision fatigue in the best way.

Dairy Queen
A summer staple. No explanation required.

Cambridge

Cambridge gives us small-town charm, classic treats, and a few fun stops worth building an afternoon around.

Indulge Ice Cream
A sweet Hespeler stop, perfect after a walk through the village.

The Caboose / Water Street Ice Cream Stop
Cambridge has its own train-themed ice cream fun, with ice cream served from a former rail car near Water Street and Myers Road.

Papou’s Place
A Cambridge classic mentioned in local ice cream roundups.

Baskin-Robbins
Great for a quick cone, family treat, or birthday cake emergency.

Dairy Queen
Soft serve, sundaes, Blizzards, dipped cones — the classics still hit.

Elmira

Elmira absolutely belongs on the Ice Cream Trail.

Sweet Scoops / Scoops Ice Cream Shoppe
Located right in downtown Elmira at 4 Arthur Street S., Sweet Scoops is exactly the kind of cheerful local ice cream shop that makes a summer drive feel worth it. They serve ice cream, milkshakes, parfaits, and vegan ice cream options.

Make it a full outing: stroll downtown, pop into a few local shops, and finish with a cone.

St. Jacobs

St. Jacobs is practically built for a summer treat.

The Village Scoop
Located at 1367 King Street N., The Village Scoop serves soft serve, Italian gelato, and ice cream right in the village.

The Ice Cream Caboose
A St. Jacobs classic. The Ice Cream Caboose is the kind of stop people remember: charming, nostalgic, and perfectly suited to a village wander. Some online sources reference the original Moser’s Ice Cream Caboose as having closed years ago, so hours/current operations are worth confirming before making a special trip.

Magnolia Living tip: Pair your ice cream with the St. Jacobs Market, village shops, and a slow wander through town.

New Hamburg, Baden & Wellesley

These are perfect “take the scenic route” communities.

Look for seasonal stands, small-town shops, cafés with frozen treats, and local restaurants offering summer desserts. Not every ice cream stop needs to be famous. Sometimes the best ones are the ones you discover by accident.

Elora & Fergus

Worth the drive. Always.

Spend the day exploring the gorge, walking along the river, browsing boutiques, and then reward yourself with ice cream. This is less of a suggestion and more of a lifestyle choice.

Stratford

A summer day in Stratford already feels special. Add ice cream after the theatre, a river walk, or downtown shopping and you have yourself a very respectable Ontario day trip.

The Magnolia Living Ice Cream Challenge

This summer, try to:

  • Visit 10 different ice cream stops.

  • Try one flavour you have never ordered before.

  • Support at least five independent shops.

  • Take one photo at every stop.

  • Vote for your favourite by Labour Day.

💚 Charlotte’s Corner

Ice cream is not just dessert. It is a summer activity, a reward system, a family tradition, and occasionally a perfectly valid dinner plan. No notes.

If you spot me somewhere with a cone in one hand and a leash in the other, please know I am doing very important Magnolia Living research.

Happy scooping, Waterloo Region.

Why Supporting Local Matters

Every scoop purchased from an independent business supports local families, creates local jobs, and helps keep our communities vibrant.

Choosing local isn't just about great ice cream—it's about investing in the places that make Waterloo Region feel like home.

💚 Charlotte's Corner

If you know me, you probably already know I have a soft spot for two things: dogs and ice cream.

So don't be surprised if you see me wandering through a small town with a cone in one hand and a leash in the other.

One of my favourite ways to spend a summer evening is discovering somewhere new, chatting with local business owners, and finding another hidden gem to share through Magnolia Living.

If you have a favourite ice cream stop that deserves a spot on this trail, I'd love to hear about it. Some of the best places are the ones recommended by neighbours, friends, and fellow ice cream enthusiasts.

Here's to sunny days, sticky fingers, and supporting local—one scoop at a time.

Happy exploring!
